We know the scalp better
The cause of dandruff is a yeast called “Malassezia”, which naturally lives on the skull. It develops to the detriment of the local flora, disrupting the balance of the microbiome (all microorganisms). Scales, more or less thick, then appear. “So far, we have very extensively studied only one of the players in the microbiome: the Malassezia yeast proliferating on the scalp with dandruff. But she doesn’t act alone, says Luc Aguilar, director of biological and clinical research for advanced research at L’Oréal. TOToday, we know that there are ten times more bacteria on the scalp, some of which are involved in the overgrowth of Malassezia. In dandruff states, there is an overall imbalance of the microbiome. ”
We treat without “stripping”
“We know better the role of the local saprophytic flora, which it is important to preserve. This is why we are looking more to rebalance and less to “strip” in order to eliminate the responsible fungus “, specifies Dr Philippe Deshayes, dermatologist. “To develop more effective treatments in the long term, the new approach is rather to target the microbiome as a whole”, underlines Luc Aguilar.
We use softer care
The treatment must act on the yeast by rebalancing the local flora. Current treating shampoos are more respectful, which assumes a gentle washing base and an active ingredient that limits the proliferation of Malassezia (piroctone olamine, zinc pyrithione, selenium disulphide). Plus a soothing active, like bisabolol, and an ingredient like salicylic acid, which eliminates dander.
We beautify the hair fiber
Care agents are added to beautify the hair: vegetable oils, glycerin, ceramides … For it to treat the problem and restore shine, it must be left on for three to five minutes.
The treatment lasts between three and six weeks, with two or three applications per week. And to avoid recurrences, continue to shampoo every week or every fortnight.
We consult if necessary
If after a month of treatment, dandruff persists or the condition of the scalp has worsened, it is better to see a dermatologist. Because if dandruff is not a disease, but a simple imbalance of the scalp, its treatment can be complex. In this case, the doctor may prescribe stronger anti-inflammatory drugs such as topical corticosteroids.
