Bacteria, dirt and fungi find refuge under your duvet on a daily basis and can have undesirable consequences on your health. Washing your sheets twice a month is recommended to sanitize your bed.
Bacteria and allergens inhabit your bed
Many are unaware that when they slip into their sheets at night, they are keeping millions of microscopic inhabitants company – a sign that it is time to change their sheets. According to a survey conducted by the YouGov institute, around 33% of Britons wash their bed linen every week, 35% every two weeks. 8% complete this task every three weeks and 10% every month. Singles seem less picky about the cleanliness of their sheets, since according to a previous study conducted in 2013, men living alone would change them only four times a year.
However, delaying washing your sheets could be dangerous for your health.. Over time, your bed linen and mattress become populated with various fungi, bacteria, dust or other pollens and allergens, which are harmful to your body.
For your health, wash your sheets every two weeks
During the night, your sweat and body fluids settle in your bed. Dead skin, cosmetics, dirt carried by the feet are all memories of your day that will end under your duvet and will be likely to cause allergies, even infections in some extreme cases.
Bedbugs are also common and cause itching in their victims.. While it is difficult to get rid of them, a recent study has shown that they are particularly attracted to dark colored sheets. Bottom line: to avoid the company of these unwanted insects, choose light sheets. If you want to be free from bacteria and other allergens in your bed, wash these sheets at least once every two weeks.
