The number of sugar cubes in soft drinks
Good question! In this section Plus goes in search of answers to nagging questions. This time: How much sugar is in a glass of Coke?
If there’s one drink that is notorious for sugary soft drinks, it’s cola. For example, you sometimes read that one glass of cola contains no less than eight sugar cubes. Is that a monkey story? How much sugar does a glass of Coke actually contain?
More than 6 lumps
A 250 milliliter highball glass of ‘normal’ cola contains 27 grams of sugar. Converted to sugar cubes (which usually weigh 4.4 grams), that is more than 6 sugar cubes.
Drinking a lot of soft drinks increases your risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. In addition, the acids in cola are not good for your teeth. Cola – and other soft drinks – are therefore not included in the Wheel of Five.
What’s in Diet Coke?
In Diet Coke, the sugar has been replaced by sweeteners, namely a mix of aspartame and acesulfame-K. As a result, there are no calories in diet cola. But because it has the same effect on your teeth as regular cola, Diet Coke is not in the Wheel of Five either.
