According to Anemf, students entering PACES spend on average nearly 6,000 euros for faculty registration fees but also for private lessons.
Medical studies are not free. Far from there. The first edition of the back-to-school cost indicator of the National Association of Medical Students of France (Anemf) estimated expenditure at 5,749 euros for the first year of medicine (PACES) and at 4,026 euros for third year students. A high cost which generates an inequality between the most well-off students and those from precarious families.
To analyze the cost of the start of the school year, Anemf imagined a typical student (not receiving a grant and having left the family nest) in the Paris region and in the provinces. First observation: students from the Ile-de-France region have an interest in having set aside their pocket money, as well as that received for their birthday and Christmas.
The weight of private preparations
For a young bachelor integrating the PACES in Ile-de-France, the cost of the re-entry is around 6,000 euros, against 4,489 euros in the provinces. This difference is mainly linked to the costs of private preparatory classes which have become almost essential for students.
The entrance examination in 2e The year of medicine is, in fact, very difficult, barely 17% of the rifles are selected at the end of the competition. To succeed, they are therefore ready to appeal to these structures which organize mock competitions, updated courses and corrected annals.
But, in fact, not all students can afford these schools. “Enrollment in one of these private prepas represents on average 25 times the amount of university registration fees in Paris for non-scholarship recipients, and 18 times in other regions,” denounces Anemf.
The pressure of competitions
An inequality also found in 3e year of medicine. At this stage of the course, students are already preparing for the national classifying exams (ECN) which they will take 3 years later. Exam preparation assistance costs around 2,260 euros in Ile-de-France and 1,526 in the regions.
For all these students, between 930 and 1,100 euros are added in daily living costs such as rent, the telephone package and transport.
“These different issues highlight the sometimes neglected importance of the social factor for the success of higher education. ANEMF will not fail to integrate these considerations into its major national consultation on the second cycle of medical studies, ”comments the organization.
