We know: washing your hair every day is not a good idea. Unless you have very oily hair (in which case, daily washing may be recommended: ask your hairdresser for advice), this bad habit causes the hair fiber to dry out – in the long run, the hair becomes dry and brittle.
So how often should you wash your hair when you have “normal” hair, that is to say neither too dry nor too oily? Asked by our colleagues at Vogue, hair stylist Rosi Fernández gives us an answer.
Two shampoos per week if you live in town
The right frequency for washing your hair “neither too much nor too little” would be 2 shampoos per week if you live in an urban areaAnd 1 shampoo per week if you live in the countryside – that is to say: in an area little affected by atmospheric pollution.
“Living in a city with a lot of pollution is not the same as living in the countryside. The climate, riding a motorbike or car, playing sports, the quality of the water with which you wash your hair… also play a role.” specifies the hair stylist. Who adds that, to make a “good shampoo”, it is necessary to emulsify the product in your hands before applying it to your hair (especially if it is a natural product ) and finish with a long rinse, guaranteeing shine.
Are you tempted by the #no-poo movement, which consists of washing your hair as little as possible? Caution : “it is not advisable to go more than a week without washing your hair, because the follicle gets clogged and is not oxygenated“explains the expert. Moreover, “you can have the impression that the hair is clean, but with pollution, sweat, tobacco smoke… the hair becomes saturated.” So we don’t let 10 days pass between two shampoos!
