Do you have a smart device? Then it is important to update it regularly. For example, because the software is outdated and your privacy data is at risk. In that case, manufacturers make additions to the existing programs: an update.
The most commonly used smart devices are the router, smart TV, smart printer, smart doorbell and smart thermostat. These devices are connected to the internet and therefore extra vulnerable to hackers and other (internet) criminals. To properly secure your device, it’s important to keep the following in mind:
- Choose a strong password. A strong password should not be too obvious, something that is difficult to crack but something you can remember. Here we provide more tips on creating a strong password. Tip: Change the default username and passwords when you start using a new device and choose a strong password.
- Do the updates. In some cases, devices do the updates automatically, but sometimes they don’t. It is best to check whether the smart device does automatic updates before purchasing the device. Already have a smart device that you need to update manually? Then we give a number of tips further in this article.
- Check all the smart devices in your home on the above two points. An internet criminal only needs one device to access your home network. It is therefore important that you check how many smart devices need an update. Do you want to know which devices fall under smart devices? Then look at safeinternets.nl/doejeupdates.
Also update your router
If you have a fixed internet connection at home, you almost always have a router (also known as a modem) at home. The router acts as the front door to your internet. The router is the device that ensures that the internet enters your home and is accessible via WiFi or cable. Through your router, hackers can gain access to other smart devices in your home, so it’s important that you keep your router secure with the latest updates. Once an internet criminal has access, he can see or intercept all data from your network. So that’s very risky.
Router manufacturers regularly release software updates. Start at the beginning: read the manual. In almost all cases, the router will update itself automatically before you know it. Still getting started yourself? Then search online for the correct software update. Type the brand, model or type number and ‘update’ in the search bar. The serial number can in many cases be found on the box, the bottom of the device, or the battery cover. Can’t get out of here? Then enlist the help of someone in your area or the customer service of the internet provider.
TIPS: Use the router that your ISP provides with your subscription, rather than your own router. In this way, updates are performed by your ISP. Some routers can be managed remotely, also disable this option if you are not using it yourself.

Another example: your smart TV
A smart TV is a television with an internet connection. They often use apps such as Netflix, Videoland, Spotify and YouTube. They also offer options for showing material on your telephone: you can, for example, play a video on your smartphone, but have it shown on the television.
- The smart TV’s sensors (such as a microphone, camera, or motion sensor) can record unsolicited information if hacked
- Cyber criminals can steal information, eavesdrop on your family, take over, or see what programs you watch
- Once criminals have access to one device, they can also access the other devices via your home network!
Most smart TVs announce themselves when an update is ready. You will then receive a message asking for permission and an active internet connection. Sometimes the manufacturer also offers an update via the antenna, a USB stick, or a signal via the cable. You can of course also read the manual here if you want to update yourself.
How to update other smart devices
The above devices are examples of smart devices in a household. There are of course many more, but the tips above apply to most smart devices. Read the manual of your smart device carefully to see if there are automatic updates. Check the username and choose a strong password.
