November 22, 1999 – For a month, a debate on homeopathy has shaken the British Medical Journal (BMJ) following the publication of an article presenting the state of research in homeopathy, as well as the ABC of the discipline.
The article by Andrew Vickers, Ph D, is an overview of homeopathic practice in Great Britain and provides data on homeopathic practice in France and Germany. He also points to the weaknesses of homeopathic research while presenting research showing that the homeopathic effect is something other than a placebo effect.
The debate which has continued since then, and which can be followed online on the BMJ website, oscillates between very posed answers, insult and hysteria. It is instructive to see how the fiercest opponents of homeopathy are usually those who are furthest from the scientific debate.
