To have beautiful skin, you have to be in good health, and that necessarily involves diet. The ideal is to consume healthy products (if possible organic to reduce the absorption of pesticides), richer in vitamins and minerals. “Prefer seasonal products, because they are grown in better conditions, are picked when ripe and are less damaged by transport”, explains Barbara Nazaries, naturopath. Vary your plates, and target them according to your problems.
If you want smooth skin
Over time, the production of collagen and elastin decreases, so that wrinkles deepen and lines become marked. To boost collagen synthesis, eat foods rich in vitamin C, a nutrient that the body cannot synthesize. You will find it in orange, kiwi, but also pepper or broccoli. You can supplement with vitamin B3, provided by tuna, salmon, legumes and nettles (in herbal tea, in soup), because they are rich in silica. Not to mention the antioxidant vitamin E, which helps prevent the degradation of collagen fibers. It is present in spinach, almonds or olive oil.
If you want clear skin
When the liver is weakened, it can lead to skin disorders, such as blemishes and pimples. So avoid anything that can clog it, such as fatty foods, sugars, alcohol. Make a detox cure based on black radish, artichoke, which purify the liver and restore radiance to the complexion. Another option, birch sap, to drink every day for 3 weeks. Also favor zinc-based foods, such as oysters, which contribute to beautiful skin.
If you need comfort
Dry or mature skin needs to fill up with omega 3 to compensate for the lack of nutrition, especially after menopause. On your plate, incorporate almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts and eat oily fish. Also consider vegetable drinks – hazelnut or almond – to replace cow’s milk. Finally, take a course of evening primrose, borage or sea buckthorn capsules to restore suppleness to the skin.
If you want to prevent redness
When your skin is prone to it, it is essential to avoid anything that is vasodilator such as alcohol, spices, too hot drinks, coffee… Also limit what is pro-inflammatory: sugar, tobacco, meat, processed products. Adopt a diet rich in antioxidants by replacing your coffee with green tea or matcha tea.
Swap pasta and bulgur for buckwheat versions, which contain rutin, a polyphenol that strengthens blood capillaries. Boost your omega 3 intake to limit inflammation: bet on flaxseed, hemp or rapeseed oils and fatty fish such as sardines, mackerel, anchovies… Finally, drink infusions based on ginkgo biloba, which stimulates microcirculation.
