Young women who have a bad image of their bodies can put their health at risk. This is what a poll conducted by Edelman Intelligence for the needs of the report 2017 Dove Global Girls Beauty and Confidence. And for good reason: some young women dissatisfied with their appearance have, among other things, a restrictive diet and refuse to go to the doctor.
54% of young girls have a poor body image
To reach this conclusion, 5,165 girls aged 10 to 17 living in 14 different countries were interviewed. Only 46% of them said they had a good body image. A reality that is not without consequences, since seven out of 10 young girls with a bad self-image declared that they had already refrained from eating. Eight in 10 also said they have refused to see family or friends in the past because of their appearance.
Disturbing figures for Phillippa Diedrichs, associate professor at the Center for the Study of Appearance at the University of the West of England and co-author of the study: “Body image remains a problem for girls (…) We still have a lot of work to do to help them develop the stamina they need to overcome the pressures of beauty. We need to change the social and cultural environment so that girls are not judged by their appearance “.
