October 21, 2010 – On Halloween, it is important to brush children’s teeth as soon as the candy tasting ends, reminds the Ordre des dentistes du Québec.
Generally, it is recommended to wait 30 minutes after a meal before brushing your teeth. But in the case of sweets, the Ordre des dentistes du Québec suggests doing it immediately after eating it, because of the harmful and rapid effect of sugar on children’s tooth enamel.
In fact, children’s teeth are more fragile than those of adults. This is why they are at risk of cavities.
Practical advice
Treats can last for weeks or even months. The Order of Dentists of Quebec recommends:
- to consume the sweets at the end of the meal, since the saliva, more abundant, helps to neutralize certain acids which attack the teeth;
- avoid soft, sticky treats that get stuck between the teeth;
- brush your teeth immediately after eating sweets. Otherwise, drink water to dilute the sugars and acids;
- eat a piece of cheese after candy: the calcium, protein and fat in cheese protect teeth and help them stay healthy;
- to use dental floss.
In 2009, in Quebec, approximately 25% of children aged 6 to 11 had at least one cavity. Among adults, this proportion reached 96%1.
