Donate your hair: the idea may seem preposterous. And yet, it is essential. The Huffington Post recently published an article explaining that hair donation doubled during and after confinement. It must be said that in two months, they had had time to gain length … And in confinement, many have done hair experiments! But in fact, What is hair donation? And how to do it?
On its website, the association Fake Hair Don’t Care explains it: Donating your hair makes wigs for people with cancer. They are then made by hand by wigmakers and allow patients who have lost their hair to have a natural look.
How to donate your hair?
To donate your hair, you don’t need to shave your head : do not panic ! There are a few rules to follow: having healthy hair for example, it can be highlighted or dyed but not having too many split ends, for example. Some cutting tips must be observed: you must “separate the hair in half and place a rubber band at the desired cut length. Hold each strand with two rubber bands. Finally, cut above the first elastic.“It is therefore better to go to a partner hairdresser, or simply a hairdresser for that matter … Finally: you will have to send your locks with a donation form.
How much does a natural hair wig cost?
For make a wig, you need an average of 6 to 10 donors. But it can vary. With Fake Hair Don’t Care, the time to get a custom wig is 4 to 8 weeks. Unlike the business, where wigs are very expensive (3,000 euros), associations like Fake Hair Don’t Care do not take advantage of your hair donated for free! We must of course pay the wigmakers, and make the association work … So the cost of a wig is less than 1000 euros, accessible to both men and women. Each quote takes into account the income of the customers.
Remember that since April 2019, Social Security has increased its reimbursement ceiling for hair prostheses. While they were only supported up to 125 euros previously, they are now reimbursed according to several criteria. Class 1 (synthetic hair and machine assembly) 100% up to 350 euros. Class 2 (hand-made wig, synthetic hair or with a minimum of 30% natural) are reimbursed up to 250 euros on a product of 700 euros maximum.
