Bird flu has been detected in a 7-year-old girl in Beijing and in the center of the country, in Henan province.
The meter is running every day and the virus is traveling. Until then circumscribed in eastern China, the H7N9 virus is spreading to other regions. Chinese authorities reported on Saturday the case of a 7-year-old girl carrying the virus in Beijing. She was hospitalized in the capital and her parents were placed in quarantine. They are poultry dealers. The little girl must have contracted bird flu from them.
Two other cases have just been reported in central China, in Henan province. One 34-year-old resident is hospitalized in critical condition, while the other, a 65-year-old farmer, is in stationary condition. Their entourage was placed under observation. No symptoms have been reported so far. With these three new cases, China officially has 51 cases of bird flu.
In Shanghai, Beijing and now in Henan Province, local authorities are taking measures to try to stop the spread of the virus: slaughtering tens of thousands of birds, closing live poultry markets, banning racing and releasing pigeons . “We are faced with a rather exceptional situation because we are dealing with an influenza virus very weakly pathogenic for birds and which has the capacity to cause serious disease in infected people”, underlined this week the director general of the organization. World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), Bernard Vallat. For its part, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reaffirmed that there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission of the H7N9 virus.
