November 12, 2003 – Garlic extracts have been shown to be effective against the bacteria responsible for gonorrhea, in laboratory tests.
Gonorrhea is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. It is caused by gonococcus Neisseria gonorrhoea.
Patrick Ruddock, a master’s student in the Department of Biology at the University of Ottawa, tested 24 supplements to see how garlic attacks the gonococcus in question. He first noticed that many of the preparations did not contain the amount of garlic promised on the label. Of the capsules, garlic powder capsules and oil capsules tried, garlic powder capsules have been found to be the best.
Four extracts were prepared and then incubated with the gonococcus. Ruddock says he’s seen activity exceeding his expectations, and even exceeding that of other plant-derived chemicals he has studied.
Extracts with the highest content of aillicin, the active compound in garlic, were found to be the most effective against gonococcus.
Dr. Ruddock will now try to see how these extracts can stimulate or block the action of antibiotics used in the treatment of gonorrhea.
