3D animation films and 3D printers were the great drivers of techniques for scanning 3D objects. Before such techniques were available, objects had to be modeled manually, which was of course a huge job with limited realism. Nowadays there is software that can interpret the data from multiple two-dimensional photos in order to arrive at a 3D model. This technique is called photogrammetry and is available to interested hobbyists in the Meshroom program. Of course, Meshroom is complex software, so it does require some study, but the results are impressive.
