At Ford, the Nugget is an increasingly popular dish. The version dedicated to camping of the Transit Custom offers two new Trail and Active variants, which add adventurous attributes to the recipe of this campervan.
By allowing you to sleep (almost) anywhere, campervans encourage adventure. But they have not yet really given in to the adventurous trend, which today affects everyone in the automotive world. Presented at the Düsseldorf caravan show as the Renault Trafic SpaceNomad, the new Active and Trail versions of the Transit Custom Nugget could therefore have a card to play.
Two different exterior presentations
The first, with a wiser appearance, takes up a name already seen on the Fiesta, Focus or Ecosport. It receives black plastic on the shields and sills, specific 17-inch rims and a grille with a unique mesh. The grid of the Trail variant is however much more spectacular: like on sports pickups F150 or Ranger Raptor, the name Ford is displayed in large letters.
If the wheels are limited here to 16 inches, their black color gives the change, while a limited slip differential (mLSD) as standard is responsible for optimizing traction. It is therefore this Trail variation that will be the most suitable for leaving asphalt trails. Powered by the same 2.0 EcoBlue diesel, the Transit Active can however receive the same mLSD differential as an option. But for this, it will be necessary to prefer the manual gearbox rather than the six-speed automatic transmission also available.
Specific features also in the cabin
Nugget production tripled in 2022
As an option, both can also be fitted with a new heated bench seat, whose heating still works when converted into a double bed, after some handling. Something to make the occupants of the room located upstairs in the pop-up roof, supplied as standard, jealous. These adventurous rivals of the VVolkswagen California and Mercedes Marco Polo are fitted out with the assistance of specialist Westfalia. Available in two lengths, they have not yet indicated their price or their marketing date in France. But Ford has already announced to triple the production of its Nugget models in 2022 to adapt to the growing enthusiasm of customers for “van life”.
