Why were aloe emodin and emodin banned?
L’aloe emodin and theemodin are hydroxyanthracene derivatives (HADs), natural substances found in many plants, including aloe vera, rhubarb, senna and cascara. These substances have laxative propertiesbut they also pose potential health risks.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded that these substances are genotoxic And carcinogens, and that they can cause gastrointestinal disturbances, cramps, diarrhea and nausea. They have been banned in Europe in 2021, due to their potential adverse effects. Note that the ban only concerns food supplements.
