What if the vitamins and minerals that make up food supplements are unnecessary and ineffective? A study conducted by Canadian researchers has just reached this conclusion.
Food supplements would have no effect on health
If, winter or summer, you take care to take vitamin and mineral supplements to supplement your diet, know that this precaution could be totally in vain. In any case, this is the conclusion reached by Canadian researchers from the American College of Cardiology who, in a recent study, provided evidence that these supplements had no effect, neither harmful nor beneficial, on the prevention of diseases.
To arrive at this observation, these researchers observed various studies that were published between January 2012 and October 2017 on the intake of food supplements such as vitamin D, calcium or even vitamin C. So many supplements that fill the shelves of pharmacies and that many people consume in anticipation of a possible deficiency.
Healthy eating rather than supplements
However, by compiling the data from these studies, the researchers realized that these supplements did not bring any benefit on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, heart attacks or even strokes.
” We were surprised to find so few positive effects from the most common supplements people consume. », Explained Dr David Jenkins, lead author of the study who, in view of these results, recommends, rather than supplementing his diet with synthetic vitamins and minerals, favor a healthy diet without processed foods.
