The flu has not said its last word. According to the latest weekly report from Public Health France (published this Wednesday, February 27, 2019), there is currently a “sharp decrease in influenza activity but a still significant contribution of influenza to hospitalizations”. Caution is always in order …
Some figures: between the start of surveillance (at the beginning of October 2018) and the beginning of February 2019, around 4,100 deaths attributable to influenza were recorded in France, “including 86% among people aged between 75 years and over ”.
Since November 1, 2018, 1,476 “severe cases” of influenza have been reported: the average age of patients was 60 years … and “among the high-risk cases for which the vaccination status was informed” the vaccination coverage was 36%. In almost all cases, a type A virus has been identified.
The flu is on the decline … but the epidemic persists
Between February 18 and 24, 2019, the rate of medical consultations for flu syndrome was sharply down (- 37%) compared to the previous week.
At the end of February, the Oscour network (Organization for the coordinated surveillance of Emergencies) reported 6,820 passages for influenza or influenza-like illness in the Emergency Department, a figure sharply lower compared to the previous week (11,373 visits to the Emergency Department) – this mainly concerned children under 5 years old.
At the end of February 2019, the peak of the epidemic was crossed in all regions of France; today, however, the entire metropolitan area remains on “epidemic” alert. Let us remain vigilant!
