Ferrari is preparing a new Icona limited series, inspired by a model from its past. A recently photographed prototype seems to confirm rumors of a LaFerrari-based supercar, whose silhouette is said to evoke that of the 330 P4 from 1967.
It has now been three years, almost to the day, that Ferrari unveiled the Monza SP1 and SP2, single-seater and two-seater versions respectively of the first model in the range, Icona. The concept of the latter is to offer vehicles inspired by Ferraris of the past, such as the “Barchetta” of the 1950s and 1960s for the Monza. For several months, a cluster of clues point to an upcoming Icona that would evoke the Ferrari 330 P3 and P4 Endurance of the 1960s. “Stolen” photos of a camouflaged prototype now support this hypothesis.
A retro and 100% thermal LaFerrari?
In recent months, initial technical information has emanated from a few sites and forums generally well informed about Ferrari. The next Icona would take over the carbon fiber monocoque chassis of the LaFerrari Aperta. It would be powered by the atmospheric and 100% thermal 6.5 l V12 of the 812 Competizione, with power that could be further revised upwards compared to the latter’s 830 hp. And its silhouette would recall that of the 330 P4 of 1967. It will be a limited series, but nothing has filtered on the number of copies expected. As for its price, we are talking about 2 to 3 million euros each. In parallel, one or more LaFerrari Aperta were seen this summer near Maranello equipped with measuring instruments such as development vehicles. And Ferrari Design Director Flavio Manzoni innocently revealed on Instagram just a week ago that the 330 P4 was one of his favorite Ferraris.
Presentation in November?
Despite its thick camouflage, the prototype recently seen on the road has everything to confirm the rumors. We can already distinguish the proportions of a two-seater with a central-rear engine, a very advanced cockpit, a stern higher than the front part and extended by a spoiler, but also or even above all mirrors installed on the fenders as on certain 330 P3 or P4 whereas this configuration is no longer used nowadays. Ferrari could unveil the car during the Finali Mondiali event, which will bring together the brand’s customers at the Mugello circuit from November 16 to 22, 2021.
This 330 Icona would not be the first modern reinterpretation of Endurance prototypes often cited among the most beautiful cars ever made. In 2006, Pininfarina produced a single copy of the P4 / 5 based on the Ferrari Enzo for James Glickenhaus, collector and boss of the manufacturer that bears his name.
