The ice cubes floating in the sodas of large establishments such as McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC or Starbucks contain more microbes than the water in the toilets of these same places. British daily journalist Daily Mail obtained a sample of the ice cubes and toilet water from fast food outlets in the town of Basingstoke, near London.
Analyzed by a laboratory, the samples revealed a rate of microbes present in the ice cubes often twice as high as that of the water of the toilets. “According to Dr Melody Greenwood, former director of the Health Protection Agency’s laboratory, these results prove that restaurants must ensure that staff are properly trained to handle ice,” the newspaper reports on its website.
The restaurants implicated in this investigation criticized the practices of Daily Mail, sometimes questionable. Yet previous studies have already shown that toilets are often cleaner than you think.
