Consumption of certain foods, such as cereals or cheese, is associated with the risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease, according to a new study.
- GERD is a rise of part of the gastric contents into the esophagus.
- The consumption of certain foods is associated with the risk of gastroesophageal reflux.
- These are cereals and cheese, the latter promoting the level of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), the bad cholesterol proteins.
10% of adults have symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) every day and 20% have them occasionally, according to Health Insurance. This rise of part of the gastric contents into the esophagus is due to a failure of the anti-reflux system.
Pork, bread, cheese, cereals: these foods are associated with gastroesophageal reflux
There are several factors favoring RGC, such as a hiatal hernia, strong pressure on the abdomen due to being overweight, the consumption of certain medications, but also that of alcohol, tobacco, chocolate, acidic foods, etc. spices, etc. According to a new study published in the journal European Journal of Nutritioncertain foods are also associated with the risk of suffering from GERD. In an initial phase of their work, the scientists found that grains, cheese, bread and pork were linked to GERD risk.
However, the authors then adjusted their results by taking into account certain factors such as body mass index (BMI), tobacco or alcohol consumption, level of physical activity, gender, etc. Results: There was indeed a negative association between total consumption of cereals and cheese and the risk of GERD. The authors found that this was due to the rate of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) – bad cholesterol proteins – favored by cheese.
GERD: “early dietary management and control of blood lipids” to prevent its occurrence
“These results show the importance of dietary factors as well as blood lipids in the prevention of GERD, indicate the authors in a press release. Thus, early dietary management and blood lipid control should be carried out to prevent the occurrence of GERD.”.
Limiting your consumption of cereals and, above all, cheese could therefore help GERD patients limit symptoms. These are characterized in different ways: burns, acid reflux, hiccups, etc. On a daily basis, they can be very annoying for people who suffer from them.
