February 7, 2007 – Good news for those who suffer from erectile dysfunction: in 35% of cases, erection problems can be resolved naturally as long as we modify certain lifestyle habits, reports an American study.
Researchers followed 400 men with erectile dysfunction (mild, moderate or complete) for nine years for at least three months.1.
Of the 35% of men whose erection problems decreased, 81% experienced complete remission. Remittance was more common in those who had complete dysfunction at the start of the study.
Conversely, a similar percentage of men (33%) experienced a regression of their condition during the study, 69% of them even reached the stage of complete absence of erection.
Age and weight
According to the researchers, the probability of a remission of erectile dysfunction depends mainly on two factors, the age of the subject and his weight.
Thus, men whose erection problems completely disappeared were, on average, six years younger than those for whom the situation deteriorated over time.
Researchers have also observed an association between weight reduction and improvement in erectile function “and quality of life in general”.
Other factors were also associated with greater erectile vigor, including physical activity and smoking cessation.
The researchers point out that cases of remission have been more frequent than expected, and that weight loss may slow or cure erectile dysfunction.
Erectile dysfunction affects one in five men between the ages of 50 and 60.
