British researchers carried out tests on rats and mice. They found that glucosamine, a dietary supplement, would calm the hyperexcitability suffered by people with epilepsy.
30% of epilepsy patients refuse to use drugs. Some because of bothersome side effects. However, these treatments make it possible to calm the hyperexcitability of neurons, responsible for epileptic disorders.
A study from the University of Alabama at Birmingham could change the daily lives of patients. It proves that glucosamine, a molecule that can be prescribed as a food supplement, could reduce this hyperexcitability. In fact, this substance can modify the biochemistry of certain proteins in the brain. These results are published in the very serious journal Journal of Neuroscience.
Results in just ten minutes
Epilepsy is a brain neurological disorder, seizures are caused by the abnormal functioning of certain neurons. Glucosamine is usually used to treat osteoarthritis. It increases the level of the O-GIcNAcylation protein.
This increase would also compensate for epileptic activity in the hippocampus. This protein would act as a regulator. The researchers carried out tests on rats and mice, the treatment with glucosamine worked in just ten minutes.
In France, between 400,000 and 500,000 people suffer from epilepsy. For people with epilepsy, the results of this research represent real hope for new treatments.
