Minister of Health Agnès Buzyn spoke on the occasion of International Women’s Rights Day.
Endometriosis, PMA, IVG, closing of maternity wards… The Minister of Health Agnès Buzyn spoke on many subjects at the microphone of France News this Friday, March 8, on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
She notably mentioned her desire to diagnose endometriosis earlier, a disabling and little-known gynecological disease, which affects 10% of women. “We are going to help with early diagnosis, because often women suffer for years during their periods, without anyone identifying their problem,” she explained this morning.
Closure of maternity wards
Following the government cacophony concerning the opening of PMA (medically assisted procreation) to all women, Agnès Buzyn also clarified the situation. “The text of the law will be ready and presented to the Council of Ministers before the summer”, she assures us, adding however that “many measures have not yet been arbitrated”, and that “the result will depend on the parliamentary calendar”. “Today, women who have the means can already go for a PMA in Belgium or Spain, in reality. If we want the right [à la PMA] is real, you probably need to allow a refund. All of this is being discussed,” she also pointed out.
On the subject of inequalities in access to care, which have become a recurring subject of the great debate organized throughout France, the Minister of Health clarified her thoughts on the closure of maternity wards. His idea is to better secure the journey of the 167,000 French women who are 45 minutes by car from the place of their birth. She wants to “assure all women that they have no worries” when they are about to give birth.
Review the duration of paternity leave
A doctor herself, Agnès Buzyn declared herself frankly opposed to the abolition of the conscience clause in terms of abortion (voluntary termination of pregnancy). “You can never force a doctor to do something he doesn’t want to do, it’s his right,” said the minister.
Review the duration of paternity leave, facilitate the change of mutual insurance during the year and allow pharmacists to prescribe prescriptions are also subjects on which the minister says she is working, with the aim of not upsetting any stakeholder. As for her potential candidacy for the European elections, the Minister of Health refused to communicate on her exchanges with President Emmanuel Macron. “All the people who speak in the newspapers come forward a lot,” she laments, saying she is very mobilized by the health law.
