“Society must protect pregnant women and their babies ”: such is the slogan of the prevention campaign on endocrine disruptors launched Thursday May 12, in Paris, and Friday May 13 in Limoges.
“An endocrine disruptor is an exogenous substance or mixture which alters the function (s) of the endocrine system and, consequently, causes a deleterious effect on the health of an individual, his descendants or sub-populations” explains the World Health Organization.
Disruptors are everywhere and their health risks are real to fetuses. Today, only bisphenol A is banned in France in baby bottles and food containers.
“By dint of studies, the scientific puzzle is now sufficiently complete for us to take action: real prevention, made up of simple measures. We doctors can take our part ”, explains doctor Pierre-Michel Perinaud in a statement which brings together 1,600 doctors (general practitioners, endocrinologists, gynecologists).
The right actions to put in place
To reduce the presence of endocrine disruptors, food should not come into contact with all kinds of plastics (boxes, sachets, food films). It is better to choose glass containers for heating in the microwave.
It is also recommended to consume “organic” fruits and vegetables, because 65% of fruits and 30% of non-organic vegetables contain pesticide residues.
For the campaign, posters and awareness messages will be displayed in waiting rooms of medical offices and hospitals to identify risky situations.
“We want to inform pregnant women or who are planning a pregnancy, but also to raise awareness among the medical profession and the public authorities, ”explains Dr Pierre-Michel Périnaud.
