Published in the journal Tobacco Control, these results point to the design flaws and lack of quality control of e-cigarettes, but also the lack of information on the labeling of these tobacco products. Researchers call on authorities to phase out e-cigarettes until safety is properly assessed.
While electronic cigarettes are increasingly used by tobacco users, there is currently very little information on adverse health effects. To determine the possible health risks associated with the consumption of these new tobacco products, American researchers analyzed 5 brands of e-cigarettes.
As a result, scientists reveal that batteries, atomizers, cartridges and cartridge packaging do not provide the most important information regarding the composition and use of e-cigarettes. In addition, no warning appears on these new tobacco products.
Researchers have also discovered the risks of electronic cigarette cartridges leaking. These leaks can lead to exposure to nicotine, a chemical that is very dangerous for adults, children, animals and the environment.
The sale and advertising of e-cigarettes is not regulated.
“Some people think that electronic cigarettes are a harmless substitute for conventional cigarettes. However, there are hardly any scientific studies on e-cigarettes and their safety. Our study shows that this product has many flaws, which could cause serious public health problems in the future if the flaws are not corrected, ”says the study’s lead author.
Unlike conventional cigarettes that burn tobacco, e-cigarettes vaporize artificial smoke that may contain nicotine as well as other compounds present in the cartridge. The smoke is vaporized in the form of an aerosol.
