In a study published in the journal New England Journal of Medicine, researchers reveal that the lesions caused by electronic cigarettes are “similar to what you might see in an explosion caused by toxic chemical fumes, toxic gases or agents“.
While the epidemic of vaping-related illnesses is not abating in the United States, researchers are trying to better understand the extent of the damage. 18 dead and 1080 sick, this is the latest report announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on October 3. The pace is accelerating, with six new deaths and 275 new cases recorded in one week.
Chemical attack
The disease logically caused by the electronic cigarette should be a so-called lipid pneumonia. This type of pneumonia occurs when oil enters the lungs. Especially since vitamin E oil is believed to be one of the probable causes of illnesses. But it would in fact be direct chemical lesions.
Patients would therefore have been contaminated by toxic derivatives or harmful agents present in vaping liquids. If 78% of patients whose records are known today have consumed THC in their electronic cigarettes, researchers do not yet know exactly which ingredient causes these diseases.
