1er September 2009 – More than half of the world’s population would have been psychologically affected by the planetary economic crisis which has been raging for several months. Canada and France are not spared.
According to a survey conducted by the Worldwide Independent Network1 (WIN) – of which Léger Marketing is a part – and conducted with 21,088 respondents from 22 countries, 54% suffered at least one of the following four psychological symptoms: stress, anxiety, depression or sleep disorder.
The Lebanese (79%), Mexicans (76%), Americans (74%), Koreans (72%) and Japanese (62%) are the most likely to have been affected by at least one of these symptoms.
Conversely, the Austrians (22%), the Dutch (24%), the Italians (35%) and the Spaniards (36%) say they are less affected, psychologically, by the economic crisis.
In France, this proportion is 57%, against 43% in Canada. Quebeckers nevertheless seem rather immune to the hints of the economy: only 34% of them said they had suffered one of the four symptoms.

Less money spent on health
In addition to harming psychological health, the economic crisis has also led to a decrease in household spending on health or food.
Thus, 45% of respondents around the world said they had reduced their spending on groceries, while 19% spent less on health products and services.
In this regard, Canada seems to have been relatively spared compared to other countries. Just over 2 in 3 Canadians (36%) reduced their grocery spending, compared to 53% in France, and 58% in the United States. In Mexico, this proportion is 75%!
As for the reductions in the budget allocated to health, they are in the order of 14% for Canadians, compared to 22% for the French and 28% for the Americans.
