In the midst of a boom, vans and motorhomes are quite heavy, bulky and not very aerodynamic vehicles. They therefore have higher than average CO2 emissions, but almost all of them manage to avoid the ecological penalty. Explanations.
L’argus told you about it recently. Based on CO2 emissions only so far, the ecological penalty has a number of exceptions. Vehicles fueled with E85 bioethanol and those used to transport disabled people thus fall through the cracks, while large families benefit from an allowance. But vans and motorhomes, which are in great demand these days, also manage to avoid this tax, under certain conditions.

What equipment to be exempted?
For this, on their gray card, they must be classified as VASP, alias Specialized Self-propelled Vehicle. This implies that they can serve as accommodation, and therefore that they include at least the following equipment:
- Seats and a table
- Berths obtained by converting the seats
- Kitchenette
- Storage spaces
All this equipment must also be irremovable, except for the table which can remain easily retractable. In the absence of VASP approval, technical control has a good chance of being refused since the 2018 reform. It is therefore a precious sesame, which also requires compliance with safety standards for gas. , electricity, ventilation or even emergency exits. But all the planners have understood that it is in their interest to respect these few constraints. Almost all vans and motorhomes therefore escape the ecological penalty today, and should also avoid the imminent tax on weight, launched on 1er January 2022.
A real advantage over conventional vans
The vans responsible for transporting passengers do not enjoy the same privileges. At Volkswagen, most versions of the Multivan will thus receive € 30,000 in tax in 2022, while the California will be exempt from it. What push some individuals to choose the van version even if they did not necessarily need its fittings, and further strengthen the success of this category! It remains to be hoped, for true “vanlife” enthusiasts, that this enthusiasm for the segment does not attract too much attention from the authorities. A few years ago, we remember that pick-ups, long exempt, ended up being penalized in turn after seeing their sales take off.
