American students have developed a nail polish that reacts to drugs such as GHB.
Failing to change the behavior of rapists, it will at least have the merit of warning potential victims. An “anti-rape” nail polish will be marketed in 2017.
The cosmetic product reacts in the presence of several drugs, such as GHB, often called “the rapist’s drug” because of the blackouts it generates and which certain malicious spirits use to achieve their ends.
The “Undercover Colors” varnish also changes color in the presence of ecstasy, benzodiazepine and ketamine. The principle is simple: all you need to do is dip your finger in your glass to check that no one has slipped a substance into it without your knowledge.
The concept was developed by four engineering students from North Carolina State University. The young Americans at the origin of this project launched in 2014 have succeeded in raising 5.5 million euros, which will allow them to launch the production and marketing of varnish in 2017. They claim to want to give power back to women and “To shift the fear from the camp of the victims to that of the aggressors”.
In the United States, many voices denounce a “culture of rape” on college campuses. According to the American sexual assault organization, RAINN, one in six American women has been or will be raped in her lifetime. In France, 16% of women and 5% of men say they have been raped and attempted rape.
