It is now proven that the hygiene of life and eating habits influence fertility of a couple. But what about sodas? A new study carried out by researchers at Boston University in the United States shows that the consumption of a sugary drink, at least once a day, is linked to a decline in fertility. The results are published in the journal Epidemiology.
Fertility would drop by 25% from one soda per day
Soda consumption is strongly correlated with weight gain, to Type 2 diabetes, liver disease … But still few studies have worked on the links with fertility. Using online questionnaires, the researchers surveyed 3,828 women who wanted to get pregnant, aged 21 to 45 and living in the United States or Canada. Their partners were also able to participate and 1,045 men also answered questions. As a first step, the volunteers completed a baseline survey of their medical history, lifestyle, diet and consumption of sugary drinks. They then had to answer a questionnaire every two months for 12 months or until the woman became pregnant.
After analyzes of the responses, the consumption of sodas was associated on average with a 20% reduction in the couple’s fertility. For women who consumed at least one soda a day, their chances of conceiving were reduced by 25%. According to the results, the consumption of energy drinks was linked to even larger reductions in fertility. It goes in the direction from a 2013 study which had been performed on mice. She showed that a sweet diet induces fertility problems.
