December 8, 2006 – It’s back, for a 4e edition, of the Guignolée du Dr Gilles Julien, one of the pioneers of social pediatrics in Quebec.
The event1 will take place on Saturday, December 16 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the corner of Aylwin and Adam streets, in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district, in Montreal, at the headquarters of the Assistance of Children in Difficulty (AED), an organization founded by Dr.r Julian.
Books, toys and gift certificates are welcome. Cash donations are particularly appreciated since they will allow the organization to pay, among other things, for the registration of children in camps, courses or other activities, as well as their transportation. Tax receipts will be issued upon request.
Santa will be on hand to personally thank all the Good Samaritans.
Last year, the Guignolée raised approximately $ 60,000 in cash, in addition to filling four trucks with miscellaneous goods. This sum allowed, to cite just one example, a hundred children to attend a summer camp last summer.
The team of Dr Julien is optimistic about doing even better this year.
The activities of Assistance for Children in Difficulty are 60% funded by the Lucie and André Chagnon Foundation2. The AED organization obtains the remainder of its funding from the public and other private foundations.
Honors for a man of heart
The Dr Gilles Julien recently became the very first Quebec Fellow of the Ashoka International Association. This organization brings together leaders in social entrepreneurship, “whose innovative and practical ideas help solve the most glaring social problems” around the world. We thus recognize the extremely original work of this pediatrician who took part for children. He wanted to get closer to them by creating social pediatric centers in two disadvantaged neighborhoods in Montreal. He thus founded Assistance enfants en difficulties (AED) in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and the Center for Preventive Services in Children (CSPE) in Côte-des-Neiges. A man of heart and action, Dr Julien leaves no one indifferent. It challenges not only families, but also communities. His work also inspires other initiatives elsewhere in Quebec and Canada. Also, the Dr Julien is creating a movement within his profession. Quebec universities now offer training in social pediatrics to medical students. Johanne lauzon |
