Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers
Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers questions about medicines. This time: does zinc help against macular degeneration?
Can taking zinc supplements reduce my macular degeneration?
Answer:
Zinc is known to have an inhibitory effect on the development of macular degeneration (eye disorders in which sharp vision deteriorates, ed.). Large studies have shown that dietary supplements containing zinc can delay the risk of macular degeneration worsening towards the end-stage of the disease. Usually specially formulated preparations with vitamins and minerals are used for this according to the so-called Areds 2 formula. Ophthalmologists recommend the dietary supplements to people at high risk of age-related macular degeneration. The formula contains 25 or 80 mg of zinc. If macular degeneration runs in your family and you want to do something yourself, you can also opt for a balanced diet with two ounces of vegetables and two pieces of fruit per day. That way you get enough zinc and other antioxidants. Smoking cessation, a healthy weight and sufficient exercise also help to slow down the eye disease.
