“You look younger than your age”: that’s a compliment we love to hear! Better: according to a new study from the University Medical Center Rotterdam (in the Netherlands), this characteristic could be indicative of a good general state of health…
To reach this conclusion, the Dutch researchers collected the photos of the faces of 2679 people, men and women aged 51 to 87, as well as their medical history. They then assembled a group of 27 volunteers and asked them to rate each person’s age, based solely on their photos.
The age of the body could be read on the face
Verdict? The researchers observed that people who “looked younger than their age” had, on average, fewer health problems than those who didn’t. Thus, being about 5 years younger than one’s age was associated with a lower risk of osteoporosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), hearing disorders and cataracts. The “visibly younger” people also had better results on cognitive tests.
“Our work shows that, up to a certain point, systemic aging of the body and cognitive functions could be visible in the face“analyze the scientists. On the other hand, no link has been found between “visible” age and the risk of atrial fibrillation, ischemic heart disease or even kidney problems.
