To peel khaki or not
Good question! In this section PlusOnline goes in search of answers to nagging questions. This time: Can you eat the skin of persimmons?
Firm, tough skin
Khaki fruit or Sharon is widely available in the autumn months, but for many it is still an unknown fruit. The bright orange, sweet and round fruit looks a bit like a tomato. It has a corolla and contains no seeds, meaning there is no core or seed line to remove.
The peel can also be eaten. It can feel a bit firm and sometimes even chewy, but there is no need to peel persimmons. However, it is important to wash any dirt from the persimmon, as is also the case with other fruits and vegetables. You can then cut or bite off the persimmon fruit.
When is persimmon ripe?
Khaki fruit is ripe when it looks orange-red, glassy and overripe. The fruit then feels soft and is juicy and very sweet in taste. Sharon can also be eaten when it is a bit firmer. Unlike other persimmons, this species does not contain tannic acid when it is not ripe. Tannic acid can give an unpleasant feeling in the mouth. Fortunately, the Sharon is mainly sold in the Netherlands.
