Vitamin C has to be made from sugar and it requires four genes, of which humans only have the first three. There are theories that we once had this gene. Also monkeys and guinea pigs cannot make vitamin C themselves. We must therefore get this vitamin through the diet (vegetables, fruit and potatoes are rich in vitamin C).
