Baby diapers contain chemicals. Some companies have made it their trademark: green diapers, from organic farming or simply without products known to be harmful to health. After worrying in 2019 about the chemicals in most diapers on the market, L” ANSES proposes European regulations to change the use of nearly 200 products.
Proven carcinogenic products
This restriction proposal has been submitted to the European Chemicals Agency. It aims to guarantee a common level of safety for all babies in Europe, regardless of the diapers purchased at the supermarket or pharmacy.
Without completely banning them, ANSES proposes toestablish thresholds not to be exceeded for products pointed out. Among them: polycyclic hydrocarbons, dioxins, furans, recognized as carcinogenic by the WHO, PCBs or even formaldehyde known for its irritant and carcinogenic effects.
Better control of the production line
After announcing that progress was being made on the side of the toxicity of disposable diapers in France, the DGCCRF had pinned three brands, bad students, last July. These were Pampers Premium Protection, Marmailles Plus and Moina Zaza.
To limit the risk of diaper contamination by certain products, the agency is asking to strengthen manufacturing protocols and control of raw materials, with upstream tests on these to make sure they are not already contaminated. Finally, to ensure that these standards are respected, an analysis process at European level must be put in place, ANSES stressed.
