Diabetes is too often seen as a direct consequence of being overweight. Yet one of the major risk factors is heredity: with a diabetic parent, a person has a 40% risk of developing diabetes. With two diabetic parents, the risk reaches 70%. This is why the French Association of Diabetics has chosen to dedicate this new National Diabetes Prevention Week (which takes place from June 4 to 10) to the hereditary risk factor. And to try to reach as many people as possible for whom diabetes remains an overweight disease, the association is launching an online test on on www.contrelediabete.fr
In France, an estimated 700,000 people have diabetes without even knowing it. Yet there is an easy to detect clue: heredity, which is one of the major risk factors for diabetes. Do you have 5 minutes in front of you? Take the 5 test questions and find out if your risk of developing type diabetes is low, medium, or greater than you think.
This test looks harmless but unscreened and uncontrolled diabetes is deteriorating the functioning of vital organs and causes serious health problems: blindness, kidney failure, cardiovascular disease or amputation. Damage that can be avoided by anti-diabetes diet , of course, but also by early diagnosis.
“The purpose of this test is to direct people at risk to treating physicians and pharmacists, to provide reliable information and to inform the public about this disease which is still too poorly perceived”, explains Gérard Raymond, president of the French Association of Diabetics. The opportunity, also, to take stock of some received ideas about this disease.
