It is now known: diet is the cornerstone of anti-diabetes treatment. To keep glycaemia (that is to say: the blood sugar level, above 1.15 g/L in the case of diabetes) under control, it is preferable © maple to favor foods with a low glycemic index.
In effect : foods with a high glycemic index (GI) – such as white sugar, sweets, industrial sandwich bread… – rush the pancreas and force it to produce a large quantity of insulin to assimilate the sugars consumed. However, this insulin spike is an aggravating factor in diabetes – whether it is type 1 or type 2.
Diabetes: long live red fruits and dark chocolate!
Conversely, foods with a low or moderate glycemic index (GI) – such as wholemeal products, green vegetables, nuts… – spare the pancreas, help us to keep our blood sugar in an acceptable range and even help to lose weight, a goal for 80% of diabetics.
I have diabetes: what foods should I eat? In the dessert and pastry department, the following foods and ingredients are interesting when you have diabetes:
- Cocoa and dark chocolate have polyphenols that reduce the risk of insulin resistance, diabetes and promote healthy blood vessels,
- Nuts help reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome, a cardiovascular risk factor,
- Strawberries would contain a molecule capable of activating a protein that reduces LDL cholesterol levels in the blood, involved in the development of complications of type 2 diabetes,
- And also: cinnamon, oatmeal, blueberries, blackcurrant…
