According to Public Health France, the circulation of the virus is increasing again in the country. Hospital and critical care admissions are also on the rise.
- Appeared at the end of 2019, the Covid-19 disease is responsible for a still active global epidemic.
- Covid-19 is the name given by the WHO on February 11, 2020 to a new respiratory infectious disease.
The Covid-19 epidemic is taking a new turn in France. After several weeks of calm, the circulation of the virus is on the rise in the country. Public Health France announced it in his weekly epidemiological update, published Friday, October 29. “In week 42 (from October 18 to 24, 2021), the resumption of viral circulation was confirmed in mainland France, with a further increase in the incidence rate“, indicates the organization in a press release. In 44 metropolitan departments, the incidence rate exceeds 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Many indicators on the rise
Nationwide, the incidence rate increased by 14% compared to the previous week. The regions are not equal in the face of this increase. In Pays de la Loire, the incidence rate is 52% higher than last week, but this rise is only 0.2% in Ile-de-France. In Guadeloupe and Guyana, the rate is falling. Depending on the age group, the evolution of the incidence rate also varies: it decreases among 20-29 year olds, but rises significantly in the over 60s. Thus, the increase is 10 points among 60-69 year olds between week 41 and week 42, and 12 points among 70-79 year olds. The average is 5,276 new cases diagnosed every day in the country.
On October 26, more than 6,500 people were hospitalized because of Covid-19 in France, including 1,062 in critical care units. Intensive care admissions were up 12% from the previous week. According to data from Public Health France“the highest rates were in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Île-de-France and Pays de la Loire”.
What about vaccination?
If more than a year and a half has passed since the start of the pandemic, these figures show that this is not the time to relax in the face of protective measures. “In a context of increased circulation of SARS-CoV-2 and winter viruses, especially among the elderly, it is essential to encourage the vaccination of people who have not been vaccinated against Covid-19 as well as the administration of reminder to eligible 65 and over”recommended Public Health France.
As of October 26, 74.3% of the French population is fully vaccinated against Covid-19, but only 16.9% of those over 65 have received their third dose. As a reminder, this third dose now concerns all people over the age of 65, those at very high risk of a serious form, people with comorbidity, immunocompromised people, those who have received a dose of the Janssen vaccine, firefighters and home helpers working with vulnerable people.
