While many doubt the figures put forward by the government to justify the anti-coronavirus vaccine campaign, a new French study provides a clear idea of the effectiveness of injections.
- Since the start of the vaccination campaign in France, 48,390,138 people have received at least one injection (i.e. 71.8% of the total population) and 43,584,130 people now have a complete vaccination schedule (i.e. 64.6% of the total population).
- Since 12/31/2019, the coronavirus has caused 4,436,327 deaths worldwide, including 750,921 in Europe.
According to a new study by DREES, there were nine times more admissions to critical care between August 9 and 15 among unvaccinated people than among those fully vaccinated.
Fewer positive PCR tests for vaccinees
As part of its mission to support the management of the health crisis, the Department of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (DREES) uses pseudonymized data from the three main databases on the crisis Covid-19: SI-VIC (hospitalization), SI-DEP (screening) and VAC-SI (vaccination). The DREES carries out cross-references between these bases, in particular in order to carry out a follow-up according to the vaccination status of people tested positive for Covid-19 and hospitalized people. “This monitoring is now the subject of a publication every week. The national results of this edition are enriched with territorial variations. The raw files with these data are accessible on the DREES website, Open Data section”, continue the experts.
Between August 9 and 15, the number of positive RT-PCR tests per 100,000 unvaccinated inhabitants stood at 430, while it was just over 50 per 100,000 vaccinated inhabitants. At a comparable population size, the rate of positive RT-PCR tests is therefore nearly 9 times lower for fully vaccinated people.
76% of admissions to conventional hospitalization are made by non-vaccinated people
Based on patients who entered the hospital between August 9 and 15 for whom a positive test could be identified in SI-DEP, 80% of critical care admissions and 76% of conventional hospitalization admissions were made by people unvaccinated, while fully vaccinated patients accounted for 13% of critical care admissions and 17% of conventional hospital admissions, respectively. Concerning conventional hospital admissions alone, they amounted to 94 patients per 1 million unvaccinated people and 14 patients per 1 million fully vaccinated people. By relating the numbers to the population of each vaccination status, admissions to critical care amounted to 28 patients for 1 million non-vaccinated and 3.2 patients for 1 million fully vaccinated. Thus, at a comparable population size, there were nearly 9 times more admissions to critical care among the non-vaccinated than among the fully vaccinated.
“Recall that on this date, in the general population, the share of unvaccinated people was 35% and that of fully vaccinated people 51%”, say the scientists. “Between August 9 and 15, the increase in hospital admissions to critical care and conventional hospitalization was mainly driven by unvaccinated people”, conclude the authors of the study.
