On March 30, the World Health Organization (WHO) outlined three possible scenarios for the coronavirus epidemic in 2022. Explanations.
- In France, the number of people hospitalized for a Covid-19 infection continues to increase. Hospitals had 21,688 patients on Wednesday, down from 21,300 on Tuesday and 20,653 seven days earlier.
How could the coronavirus develop in the coming months? This is the question answered by the World Health Organization (WHO) in a revised version of its strategic plan to fight the pandemic. On March 30, the health authority presented, in Geneva, its “third strategic plan, which could and should be our last.” During this press conference, the institution revealed the three paths that the virus could take during the year 2022.
The three WHO scenarios on the evolution of the pandemic
First, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus discussed the most likely scenario. “The virus will continue to evolve, but the severity of the disease it causes will diminish as immunity increases through vaccination and infection,” did he declare. Peaks of infections may occur as immunity weakens, which will require booster vaccinations in particular for the most fragile patients.
“In the best-case scenario, we could see the emergence of less severe variants, and recalls or new vaccine formulations will not be necessary”, said the director general of the UN organization. According to members of the health authority, the worst scenario would be the appearance of a variant “more virulent and highly transmissible” which could harm “the protection of populations through previous vaccination or infection.”
