Soon Christmas Eve and its traditional excesses! Between the aperitif, the glass of wine to accompany the capon, the flute of champagne which slides the log and the digestive after the coffee, our alcohol consumption will certainly skyrocket …
Are you a migraine sufferer? Warning: according to a new study conducted by the Leiden University Medical Center (in the Netherlands) and published in the specialist journal European Journal of Neurology, alcoholic drinks would promote migraines in sensitive people.
To arrive at this conclusion, the scientists worked with a group of 2197 individuals suffering from periodical migraines: they answered a questionnaire concerning their alcohol consumption during the last 3 months.
To avoid: red wine!
Verdict? 35.6% of participants say that alcohol increases the risk of having a seizure: in a third of them, alcohol consumption even led to a migraine in just 3 hours. For 77.8% of participants, wine (and red wine in particular) is “the” drink to avoid to limit migraines. Then come white wine, champagne, beer, whiskey, rum and finally, vodka, cited by 8.5% of volunteers.
To reduce the risks, 11.9% of the volunteers had chosen not to consume alcohol at all. The researchers also found that the impact of alcohol was greater in people with a low body mass index (BMI), that is to say less than 18.5.
As a reminder, about 15% of the world population is affected by migraine, a neurological disease characterized by repeated attacks manifested mainly by painful headaches (cephalgias). Women are more affected than men.
