We sometimes wonder about the type of sugar we should choose: brown, white, beet or coconut extract? Biochemist Jessie Inchauspé, author of the successful account Glucose Goddess on Instagramgives his opinion on the best sugar to choose, at least from a blood sugar point of view.
So, brown sugar or white sugar? “No importance” replies the biochemist! Through a graph, she explains two teaspoons of sugar in her cup are equal, regardless of the color of the latter. This always results in a spike in blood sugar levels within two hours of ingestion. According to her, the different sugars are just a question of marketing regarding the increase in blood glucose.
Sugar has no nutritional benefit
In an interview given to Top Santé in 2021, dietitian nutritionist Angélique Houlbert specified that white sugar had no nutritional benefit: “It is devoid of vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants and contains 4 calories per gram. A cube of sugar contains 24 calories, but without any interesting nutritional elements. These are called empty calories.
The brown sugar is just from another cooking process, and slightly caramelized. In fact, there is no difference, except that brown sugar has a more pronounced taste. The specialist also specified: “From a nutritional point of view, there is no difference. The number of calories between the two types of sugar is almost identical. In colored sugars, there are more minerals. But really very little. This quantity will not not a big difference for your body“. She also pointed out that blood sugar levels were disrupted in exactly the same way by both sugars.
