Category 1 or 2: what does it mean?
Category 1 masks must have a filtering power greater than 90%, while category 2 masks, now banned in schools and businesses, have a filtering capacity of more than 70%. Fabric masks can be Category 1, but the filtration performance of 90% must be clearly marked on the packaging.
FFP2 mask, less comfortable, but more effective
While its wearing has been made compulsory in Germany and Austria, in France, the Ministry of Health has not advised its generalization. Not very breathable and less comfortable, FFP2 masks have a very high filtration level, greater than 90%. Their cost is also higher than that of surgical or fabric masks.
What masks at school and in business?
In schools, wearing the category 1 “general public” mask will now be compulsory. It is up to the parents to provide them. In a company, wearing a category 1 mask or a surgical-type mask is recommended if a distance of 2 meters cannot be maintained between employees.
What about fabric masks?
