Several studies have already analyzed the consequences of cannabis consumption on oral health. Today, it is the dentists of the Belgian Dental Society who are sounding the alarm. In fact, the longer a person consumes cannabis, the more likely they are to see their teeth yellowing, eroding, falling out, developing cavitiessensory disturbances, fungal infections or precancerous lesions.
These conditions affect more smokers of cannabis than tobacco, because the molecule responsible for this damage is THC, the active ingredient contained in the leaves. According to dentists, it modifies the oral bacterial flora, decreases the saliva production and makes dental plaque thicker and stickier, and therefore more difficult to remove. These changes can also lead to the appearance of diseases on the tissues that support the teeth and cause them to dislodge. In addition, cannabis use is also associated with snacking, alcohol, poor hygiene and an unbalanced diet. All of these factors also contribute to the deterioration of dental health.
“Create a relationship of trust”
“Any cannabis (and of course tobacco) smoker should regularly consult their dentist, who could inform them without judging, detect oral damage, treat it or even, if necessary, refer the patient to another specialist”, explains Véronique Seha, general dentist and lecturer on the impact of smoking on oral health at the Respiratory Diseases Fund (Fares), at The evening. “It is important to create a relationship of trust to address this delicate subject and thus allow the consumer to discuss calmly with the practitioner”.
