According to UNICEF, 77 million newborns, about half of all babies, are not breastfed within the hour of birth, depriving them of essential nutrients, antibodies and skin-to-skin contact that protect them against disease and premature death.
Also, to encourage all mothers around the world to breastfeed their newborns, the United Nations (UN), the World Health Organization (WHO) and Unicef have decided to ‘encourage the “brelfie” trend on social networks.
Don’t be afraid to breastfeed in public
Contraction of the two words “breastfeeding” and “selfie” (this one, you know), the “brelfie” is a photo of a breastfeeding mom, posted on social networks. These breastfeeding selfies are snub to censorship because breastfeeding moms in public are often taken to task by those who are disturbed.
The UN, WHO and Unicef have therefore chosen to vote in favor of brelfie in order to recall the importance of breast milk in infant nutrition: “World Breastfeeding Week kicked off on August 1 and the UN wants to get people talking about breastfeeding to improve infant nutrition around the world.” said Christophe Boulierac, spokesperson for Unicef.
