Every week you swear to yourself not to give in to treats at snack time, to no avail. To keep this anti-snacking resolution, Dr. Joan Sabate, a nutritionist at Linda University in California advises you to review the composition of your lunch by adding a key food: avocado. A simple half an avocado on your lunch menu will allow you to last all day without being torn by hunger, he says.
The doctor draws this conviction from the experience carried out with 26 overweight adults and reported in the specialized journal Nutrition Journal. Adding half a fresh avocado to lunch alone reduced the desire to eat within three hours by 40%. Over the five hours following lunch, the urge to snack was reduced by 28%.
“We noticed that a serving of avocado at lunch increased the caloric intake and monounsaturated fatty acids, but without being accompanied by an increase in the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood”, sums up the specialist. in nutrition, quoted by the Daily mail.
Good reasons to eat it
In other words, not only the avocado has a strong satiating power but in addition it would not have harmful consequences for health, by excluding any increased risk of diabetes for example. Better, “it could have a role in the regulation of the glycemia”. This assumption should be the subject of a thorough study, continues the nutritionist.
If we can count on avocado to calm our sweet tooth cravings, it is surely thanks to its richness in soluble and insoluble fibers. These facilitate intestinal transit and slow down the breakdown of carbohydrates, increasing the feeling of fullness.
With 150 calories per fruit, avocado is also a food rich in good fats, monounsaturated fatty acids whose benefits on cardiovascular health have been demonstrated.
If at noon you don’t have an avocado available, think about other satiating foods: whole grains, eggs, dairy products, fish, etc.
