Smoking harms your health and that of your descendants. Researchers at the University of California have found that tobacco promotes asthma not only in smokers but also in their children and grandchildren.
The experiment consisted of injecting nicotine into pregnant female rats to analyze the condition of the lungs of their young. The study clearly shows transmission of asthma to the offspring. These rats themselves later gave birth to asthmatic rats even though they had not received an injection of nicotine. No genetic mutation was observed.
Lifestyle affects health and that of one’s own family
These results, published in the Review of Obstetrics & Ginecology, demonstrate the impact of smoking during pregnancy on the respiratory health of the future child but also on future generations.
Several studies have highlighted the risks of smoking when you are pregnant: complications during pregnancy (anemia, bleeding, ectopic pregnancy), increased premature babies, insufficient weight … The mother’s nicotine would even affect the educational development of the future child, more exposed to bad grades.
