A gynecologist from the Bordeaux University Hospital has been indicted for “involuntary injuries” on a woman who had to undergo a four limb amputation after an abortion.
A gynecologist-obstetrician from Bordeaux University Hospital has been indicted for “involuntary injuries”, reports AFP. He was on call during the abortion (voluntary termination of pregnancy) performed on a woman in July 2011. The patient had to have four limbs amputated following sepsis.
Too late treatment
The practitioner is accused of not having prescribed antibiotics on time to the patient, a version that the latter has supported since the facts. In fact, the days following the surgery, the mother went to the emergency room twice, suffering from severe fevers. She was sent home for the first time.
It was not until Sunday at the end of the day, two days after the abortion, that the diagnosis was made and the antibiotics prescribed. The patient, who carries type A pyogenic streptococcus, a bacteria that destroys the flesh, had to have both feet, right forearm and left hand amputated. She believes that faster treatment would have avoided tissue necrosis, and therefore amputation.
“Chain of Responsibility”
The indictment of the gynecologist on duty that day occurs after an expert report conducted as part of the investigation. “We are dealing with a complex case,” the practitioner’s lawyer told AFP, who requested a second opinion from the investigating judge. For me, this does not fall within the scope of the criminal offense. There is a whole chain of responsibilities that the training will have to determine. “
“There is a dramatic side that reminds us that today, no operation is benign,” he added. This affects the doctor who is first there to treat ”.
According to one study carried out in France in 2006, the overall rate during a surgical abortion of immediate complications (hemorrhages, uterine perforations, cervical tears) fluctuates between 0.01 and 1.16%. Complications are not more numerous than with medical abortion.
